The RACE FOR SIGHT is a bicycle road race, with A & B fields. The course winds through the gently rolling terrain of the beautiful Susquehanna River Valley near Windsor, NY. The race is presented by A.V.R.E., with assistance from the Tioga VELO Club and the Binghamton and Windsor Lions Clubs. Proceeds go to support A.V.R.E. vision rehabilitation programming and Lions Clubs' charitable activities. For more information on A.V.R.E.'s programming, visit our website at www.avreus.org. To learn more about how you can support the race, read the Rewards of Sponsorship.
The Races/Ride:
The A field is for experienced racers only, equivalent to USCF Cat 3-4. Men, Women, and Juniors (under age 19) will all race together. The B field is a Citizen's race, plus tandem teams. Despite this being labeled a race, we encourage riders of various levels to participate in the B field as long as they are comfortable with the distance and terrain. No experienced racers will be allowed to ride in the B race. We reserve the right to place racers in the field appropriate for their level of experience. Men, Women, Juniors and Tandem Teams will all race together. Tandems will ride in the B race only. Approved helmets are required. No aerobars allowed.
Fees:
The registration fee is $25 in advance ($15 for Juniors) plus BikeReg fee until noon on Friday, July 15th. The fee is $30 ($20 for Juniors) on-site the day of the race. Advance registration is at BikeReg.com only. Goody bags to the first 100 registrants. No mail-in registrations. No refunds. All racers, including both members of a tandem team, must pay the registration fee and sign a waiver form.
Race/Ride Times:
Registration is from 8:30 until 9:45 at the Windsor Village Green. The A race begins at 10:00 am, the B race/ride begins shortly after. YellowJacket Racing will be providing chip timing for more accurate and faster results.
The Courses:
The A course is approximately 40 miles and consists of two loops around the following route: It begins at the Windsor High School and proceeds north on NY Rt. 79. It turns right at Center Village onto Bridge Street and crosses the bridge over the Susquehanna River, then left on Center Village Loop Rd., and right on E. Windsor Rd. It then proceeds south, through the "S" curve, turns right onto Old Rt. 17, and goes to the traffic light at the Windsor Village Green. The race will complete a second loop, turning right onto NY Rt. 79 and following the same route. Upon reaching the traffic light at Windsor the second time, racers will turn left onto Rt. 79 and proceed approximately 1.3 miles, then turn right onto Piper Hill Road for the final climb to the finish line.
The B course is approximately 26 miles and consists of one loop around the following route: It begins at the Windsor High School and proceeds north on NY Rt. 79, turns right on NY Rt. 7 and right in Nineveh, crossing the river. At the end of the bridge, it turns right onto E. Windsor Rd., proceeds south, through the "S" curve, then turns right onto Old Rt. 17. Upon reaching the traffic light at the intersection with Rt. 79, racers will turn left onto Rt. 79 and proceed approximately 1.3 miles, then turn right onto Piper Hill Road for the final climb to the finish line. Again, we encourage non-racers to participate in this field. The terrain is generally rolling with one significant incline and the scenery is beautiful! It is an enjoyable course for both racers and recreational cyclists.
Prizes:
Cash prizes totaling $500 will be split among the top racers in the A race - both men's and women's. Non-cash prizes will be awarded for primes. Medals will be awarded in various categories in both races. "Door" prizes will be given away during the awards ceremony.
